Working with Gay and Queer Men Through an IFS Lens

This seminar explores the clinical application of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model in psychotherapy with gay and queer men.

Participants will become familiar with essential terminology related to sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as common internal experiences and adaptive strategies that may develop in response to stigma, discrimination, and the chronic social stress associated with belonging to a sexual minority (minority stress).

Particular attention will be given to clinical considerations when using the IFS model, including distinguishing identity from burdens, working with the psychological impact of chronic minority stress, and supporting clients without pathologizing their identities. The seminar will also address the importance of therapists' awareness of their own reactions, assumptions, and potential biases in the therapeutic relationship.

Guest Speaker: Max Littman, LCSW is an IFS therapist with advanced training in complex trauma, Somatic IFS, attachment trauma, and grief therapy. He works with individuals who have experienced complex trauma as well as with mental health professionals. Max has extensive experience providing psychotherapy to LGBTQIA+ clients and brings a deep understanding of the unique experiences, challenges, and therapeutic needs of this community.
